"All right, Thom. But understand this: I do care for you. I care for all the lost souls that end up here."

Technically speaking, the human Greta and the alien that uses her identity as an avatar are two separate characters, but - for the sake of simplicity - this article will oftentimes treat both characters as one and the same.

Greta, voiced by Madeleine Knight, is a character in LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS, appearing as a simulated person in Thom's mind in the first season episode titled "Beyond the Aquila Rift". Her true form is that of The Creature.

Existence[]

Greta is an old friend of Thom, with whom she had a fling four years prior to the events of the episode Beyond the Aquila Rift. Little else is known about the real Greta.

It is revealed, however, "Greta" serves only as an avatar for a spider ant-like alien with telepathic abilities, whose hive Thom's ship crashes into when a routing error knocks it off-course. With the merciful intention of distracting Thom from his imminent doom, she infiltrates his mind and crafts an elaborate and detailed simulation inside.

History (false simulation)[]

When the Blue Goose is docked into Saumlaki Station, Greta enters the spaceship to greet Thom and his crew. She explains to Thom that his ship arrived at the station via a routing error, and Thom and Suzy struggle to come to terms with the news. Greta helps Thom put Suzy back into her tank after she collapses from surge tank sickness.

After chatting in the bar of the station, they have sex in her rooms, however, she confesses that she's not been entirely honest, letting him know that they landed in a place that is actually much farther than she let them know, which means that hundreds of years have passed on Earth. After Suzy saw who she was and cut her, the cut disappeared in a matter of minutes or hours. Thom realized she was not human and after pressuring her, she also confessed that she had been feeding him a simulation in order to keep him safe. After declaring that she cares about all the "lost souls" that ended up where they truly are, she lifted the simulation, allowing him to see how she truly looked like. Since he became hysteric due to her horrifying appearance, she put him back in a simulation, erasing such traumatic memories.

Appearance[]

Greta is a bleached blonde, short-haired woman with pale, freckly skin and greyish-blue eyes.

The Creature[]

The creature - when submerged in the dark - vaguely resembles the shape of a female human. When in the dark, her thorax resembles a human head, her actual head resembles a woman's bust, and her limbs have the general shape of that of human limbs. That illusion is quickly shattered when properly exposed to the light.

However, she is anything but human. Her true form - in addition to being nightmare-inducing - very strongly resembles that of an insect. She has six legs, with an additional four legs on her abdomen to walk on the hive ceilings. Her head is covered with over 50 eyes and a simplistic, leech-like mouth that cannot be closed. She is drenched in an ever-pouring slimy liquid, possibly the substance that makes up the hive's webbing.

Though she can communicate through telepathy, she is not actually capable of speech, instead limited to hissing and chittering. When she walks into the light, she does so at Thom's direction. It is possible that she was deliberately attempting to make Thom panic so that she could place his mind back under her control.

Abilities[]

  • Simulation Manipulation - Greta has the uncanny ability of infiltrating another being's mind without any external technology. Though she does not have the ability to literally mind-control another being, she can nonetheless create detailed and elaborate (although imperfect) simulations inside of their mind based on their previous memories and other fabrications.
  • Memory Erasure - Greta can erase memories from another being's mind.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Greta's true form makes an appearance twice in the simulation: through a glass bottle as she sits with him in the bar, and as a shadow against a wall as she tells him that he's in a simulation.
  • In keeping with LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS's general theme of being NSFW, her head vaguely resembles the sexual characteristics of both human males and females. Namely and respectively: a pair of breasts and a scrotum. Her mouth also loosely resembles the insides of a human female's vagina. It could be argued that the creature herself is meant to be a grotesque caricature of the human body.
  • It is implied that despite being a completely alien being, Greta is capable of empathy, using her telepathic abilities to give those stranded in Saulaki station some pleasant memories before passing away. She also seemed to be distraught at the fact that she witnesses the same situation with every single stranded person ending in Saumlaki Sstation.
