Turboraptor is a character in LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS, appearing in the first season episode titled "Sonnie's Edge". He was the Beast piloted by Simon.
Backstory[]
Like with Khanivore, it's never stated when Turboraptor was created. Unlike Khanivore, who was built for speed and agility, Turboraptor was bred primarily as a brute force fighter, having been created by fusing rhino and warthog DNA together with gorilla as the base hominoid genome, giving him strength and raw power limited his speed and reflexes in the process.
History[]
Turboraptor charges into the arena after the announcer shouts his name. Once the fight starts, it's apparent that Khanivore is the superior fighter, despite her lack of armor or protection, she was easily able to counter most of her opponent's attacks and counter them with quick slashes to his belly and chest. Eventually, Turboraptor loses his left arm to Khanivore, only to replace it with a retractable blade made entirely out of bone and proceeded to slice her tentacles before fatally stabbing her in the stomach. Unfortunately for him, Khanivore is able to recover long enough to latch onto him, move his head aside, and stab her nose horn into his chest before tearing his head off, killing him.
Powers[]
- Strength: Due to his massive size as well as being grafted with rhino DNA and even having gorilla DNA as his base hominoid genome, Turboraptor has immense strength, which enabled him to trade blows with Khanivore and presumably other Beasts in previous fights.
- Armored Hide: As he has rhino DNA in his genetic structure, Turboraptor possesses armored skin that enhances his endurance, though Khanivore's claws and tentacle spikes easily pierced his flesh.
- Hammer Right Arm: Turboraptor's main weapon is his oversized right arm that encased with stronger exoskeleton thus allowed him to deliver devastating blows better than his normal-looking left one. Three protrusions on the back of said arm can be extended to increase the damage of his blows, particularly while charging upon foes.
- Retractable Bone Blade: After losing his left arm, Turboraptor reveals a retractable blade made out of bone that he uses as a replacement to his lost limb.
Differences between Short Story and Love, Death & Robots Short[]
"The Urban Gorgons team had stitched together a small bruise-purple dinosaur, minus tail. Its body was pear-shaped with short dumpy legs – difficult to topple. The arms were weird, two metres fifty long, five joints apiece – excellent articulation, have to watch that. One ended in a three-talon claw, the other had a solid bulb of bone. The idea was good, grip with the talon and punch with the bone fist. Given the arm’s reach, it could probably work up enough inertia to break through Khanivore’s exoskeleton. A pair of needle-pointed, fifty-centimetre horns jutted up from its head. Stupid. Horns and blade fins might make for good image, but they give your opponent something to grab; that’s why we made Khanivore ice-smooth." ― Turboraptor's description in the novel.
- Much of Turboraptor's description follows the source material albeit with some additions and minor changes. Most notably, he sports charcoal gray exoskeleton, the oversized arm has four talons and three extendable protrusions for increasing the damage from his blows, and his horns are positioned into tusks-like. He also has four eyes, a detail which not alluded in the original short story.
- Turboraptor's name in the original short story is much more indicative as he matches Khanivore in speed, resulting the latter's hesitation to go offensive as much as in Love, Death, and Robots.
- Nearing the height of the fight, Turboraptor manages to damage some of Khanivore's tentacles earlier by chance unlike in Love, Death, and Robots where he manages to do so once he deploys his bone blade. Not only that, his attempt to skewer Khanivore's gut is less successful as she redirected the blow into her right leg at the last moments before tearing his head off in retaliation, ending the fight.
- It must be noted that the fight's last minutes in Love, Death, and Robots adaptation is changed to evoke imagery of rape victim who revealed to be not as helpless as the perpetrator assumed while forcing his way upon her: The cornered Khanivore resorts to goad Turboraptor with the facade not unlike that of a helpless woman about to be raped to lure him into the range of her bladed head crest. The subsequent scene of Turboraptor stabbing her in the gut and subsequently had his throat sheared by Khanivore's bladed head crest also played like the rapist unknowingly sealing his fate as he forces his way upon his would-be victim, leaving him to open to threat from the direction he didn't even consider.
- Turboraptor having its horn pulled by Khanivore so she shear his throat with her bladed head crests is a nod to Sonnie's distaste regarding horns and blade fins' potentially liability in fights for they unwittingly provide opponents something to grab on.
